NERVOUS (Pt. 1)

	<img width="1024" height="1536" width_o="1024" height_o="1536" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d2dc853fa054f54a13a13516379526fd39330d57913822810f0d935ef0b92a90/crookedycrook_polaroid_of_man_wearing_sharp_futuristic_clothing_e186f16a-8e6c-4e75-b2c1-b5765b115b51.png" data-mid="183275306" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d2dc853fa054f54a13a13516379526fd39330d57913822810f0d935ef0b92a90/crookedycrook_polaroid_of_man_wearing_sharp_futuristic_clothing_e186f16a-8e6c-4e75-b2c1-b5765b115b51.png" />
This is how lots of my ideas start: I find a phrase or fragment of a melody which feels good enough to repeat over and over.

Even if this starter phrase will only occur once in the final song, it has to be able to bear thousands of repetitions and still feel good. This is because — at least for the way I make music — the process of recording and producing music involves dealing with hundreds or thousands of tiny details, layers of sound, that will eventually amount to a full song. But while I’m making it, the final arrangement of the layers is not yet clear, which means I will make one small-but-meaningful change at a time to a given section, and then listen a few times, with and without this small change. Then I decide whether the change makes the song better or worse, or more accurately, whether it feels how I want it to feel. This process is then repeated until the song is finished. So that initial idea needs to be strong.

In the case of NERVOUS, this starter idea was the combined lyric and melody of the first half of the chorus:

“You make me so nervous

Slipping on your surface,

It’s like I’m tryna call

But I never get through”

I’m always wary of making analogies in lyrics, mostly because of a tweet I saw years ago that said something like “OK poets, we get it… things are like other things”. Still, making previously unseen or unfelt connections between objects is one of the great pleasures of writing. Plus, in this case, I felt the lyric was both fresh to my ears and clean on the page: usually a strong starting point for a good pop lyric.

Then I had to figure out what the music should be doing.

By this point, I already had the basic chord progression, but in the original demo, the chorus included a huge brassy synth-stab on each chord change. This is a dangerous kind of sound to have in a demo, because it feels big and bombastic, but ultimately is a bit too close, vibe-wise, to something that would be an official world cup song. Maybe one day I’ll write an official world cup song, but in a song about trying and failing to connect with someone who maybe isn’t really open to connection, it seemed a bit out of place.

In the end, I did actually use the sound for the very last chorus, albeit significantly quieter than it ever was in the demo. This is also one of my favourite things about producing music: the same sound can have a very different emotional impact depending on how loudly you put it in the mix. Make it too loud and it will feel overbearing, make it arguably too-quiet, and it can feel like the song is bursting to get out of itself.

The main plucked guitar chords, that you can now hear throughout the song, took days of trial and error. The chord progression itself wasn’t the issue, it was the way I was voicing the chords on the guitar — i.e., exactly which notes of the chord I was playing in which order, and on which strings (as the gauge of the strings really changes the perceived timbre of the notes). I wanted something that felt simple, but not something I had heard before, which — given how much music I listen to — is often a challenge. I tried jazz voicings, folk voicings, bossa nova voicings, r&amp;b voicings, whatever I could think of.

In the end, the solution was to tune my guitar to a nice open D tuning, and put a capo on the 7th fret. From there I found some nice chord shapes that outlined the chords perfectly. Those days of hitting my head against the wall, trying to find the right guitar part were also worthwhile for another reason: if I hadn’t ended up in that open tuning, on that 7th fret, I’d never have come up with the guitar solo towards the end of the song, which was a one-take wonder, entirely made possible by the combination of capo &amp; open tuning that made it almost impossible to play a wrong note.

So I had some chords, and half a chorus. That’s how it started.

Final song here: NERVOUS

NERVOUS (Pt. 2)

&nbsp; &nbsp; Some realities are so dense, they must be waded through. Some parts of our anatomy are so packed with nerve-endings that even the slightest touch goes beyond “feeling”. It only hurts. There are moments in life, of varying duration, when we experience the world as a force to be overcome: a headwind, laden thick with the debris and detritus, cast off from our day-to-day.

Sometimes we are in good condition, we feel strong, and we almost enjoy pushing back against this force. Other times we are standing in a stranger’s kitchen, cleaning up after the dinner we have quietly made and silently eaten.

A song, especially a recorded production (as opposed to a live performance) can be an almost overwhelmingly dense slice of reality. My productions use a combination of live performance captures, legally and illegally acquired samples (sometimes lasting less than a second, sometimes lasting several minutes), analog electronics, digital emulations of analog and even acoustic instruments, dynamics processing, time-based effects, and an array of editing techniques both subtle and gross, which give almost unimaginable control over every second of audio, and every 44100 / 48000-sample subdivisions of that second, that my tools allow me access to.

When I was writing NERVOUS, I felt that to accurately capture the experience I based the song on, I would essentially need 2 different songs to be happening, more or less simultaneously. This feeling is something I deal with often when I make songs. One approach I’ve often taken, is using something I call “parasemantics”, which is where I deliberately write a lyric that, when sung, will be heard as saying multiple things, each having a separate meaning, but whose combination of meanings get closer to the feeling than any one alone could.

For example, in an old song of mine, “The Punch” I wrote:

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; All my life

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Been keepin’

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; All these li(v)es

&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; I still need ‘em

On the line “all these lies”, I actually sang it in 2 layers: one where I sang “lies” and one where I sang “lives”. I didn’t mean one or the other, I meant both, at the same time. The effect is something like a double entendre, except instead of trying to make a joke, we are trying to pack as much meaning into a single line, or word, as possible.

However, this is not always the right approach. Sometimes a song (or a life) just needs to take a hard turn into the ditch.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; There’s moments in my life

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Like a confluence of tiny tortures

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; And I’m starin’ at the sink

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; But I can’t seem to get these dishes clean

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Tell me why I still stretch towards you like evening

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Tell me how it is, and how it was, and how it will be

I don’t want to say too much about this section of the song — I think the introduction of this post gives enough context.

What I will say is that I had a lovely day trying different chord voicings that would a) separate this section from the first half of the song, and b) still follow the same harmonic structure, allowing me to sing the same chorus melody over it, in the final chorus.

I then recorded each chord separately, multiple times; selected the best take of each individual chord, and chopped them up to fill the whole phrase. I could have played the chords all together in one take — there’s plenty of space between them — but in this case, the intensity of focus from playing one chord at a time felt better than the intensity of thrashing them all out in a single take. Different densities of intensities.

The drums are another combination of samples, frantic, chopped up, amplified, lightning and thundered.

When artists talk about their songs like “perfect for an autumn walk” or “listen to it on a speedboat” or whatever, I am inclined to think that they’ve forgotten what music is, or what it can be. Close your eyes if you need to, turn it up as loud as you can, immerse yourself in the song, and I will take you where you need to go.

Final song here: NERVOUS

	Whenever I plan a trip to London, I find myself in two minds about it.&nbsp;

Usually, I have some good things lined up, some artists I’m excited to work with, or friends I’ll get to see. Sometimes just having a change of scenery is what’s appealing about it; different places create different work. But it’s also not that long ago that I took my first “work-trip” to London, and my first session there was with an English guy who thought it was hilarious to make jokes about the Great Famine &amp; potatoes, as a way to break the ice.
My sense of humour stretches pretty far, and I try always to be generous to people who make bad jokes, because it often comes from a place of anxiety or discomfort about something. But I will say that if you are an English person, meeting an Irish person for the first time — you can probably hang back on the famine jokes. Maybe something was in the air that trip, because that same week, I also got yelled at, on a bus, by an English guy who heard my accent and decided to launch into a full-volume tirade about Irish travellers.
Luckily, my managers and I seem to have developed a much better dickhead-detection system since that first trip, and on this trip especially, all of the artists I worked with were incredible: both as people and as artists.
Of my 7 days in London, I had 1 social media “content day”, saw 2 shows (Luna Morgenstern the night I arrived, and underscores the following night), had 5 sessions with 4 artists, and made starts on 6 new songs.
Sessions with artists — especially artists you’ve never met before — are always interesting. I used to beat myself up if we finished the day with anything less than a fully-finished song, I think partially because when I started doing sessions, my frame of reference was the pop / EDM world, where it’s pretty common to get the whole song written (if not fully produced) in the day, sometimes multiple songs in the same session.
I have worked like this, and I still do when the situation calls for it (especially as I live in Berlin and many of the artists I work with don’t — in-person time can be limited). One of the challenges with that mode of working is that, sometimes, you end up with a structurally “complete” song (i.e., words and melodies for 2 verses, a pre-chorus, a chorus, and a bridge) that, sonically feels quite skeletal, or in the worst case, soul-less.
This isn’t deliberate, of course. Everyone in the room is working their hardest, to make the best use of each others’ time, out of a sense of mutual respect (usually lol). Also, to be fair, although sessions are often fun, they are not exclusively social activities, it’s not just a hangout. We are there to make something.
The point, for me, is that this “something” doesn’t need to be a full song in a day. I would much prefer us to spend 8 hours making an 8-bar loop that is absolutely DRIPPING in feeling, in emotion, than to make a “full song” that neither of us is actually excited about (beyond the temporary feeling of achievement from having been “productive”). Sometimes the perfect lyric falls out of your mouth on first attempt, but often it is a process of many attempts, sometimes with days or weeks, or months, or years in between.
Fortunately, I’ve written enough songs so far in my life that the actual number of songs I write has stopped feeling like an important metric to me. I’ve written a lot. Loads. I don’t need to get the number any higher just for the sake of it. So the song will take as long as it takes.
Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not sitting around in a session, waiting for the lyric (or the chord, or the production element, whatever) to arrive. Usually, I’m zoned-in to the point of forgetting to eat or drink, trying everything that I — and whoever else is with me — can think of to enrich and deepen the feeling of whatever we’re working on.

I guess it’s the difference between going fast, and being in a rush. I work quickly, but I will also block out a whole day (or week) to get the drum sounds right, if that’s what it needs.
Anyway, huge shoutout to Luna Morgenstern, twst, MEYY, and OhEm for making this London trip my favourite yet. Nothing more fun than chasing art &amp; emotion with people who are equally hyped to go down the rabbit hole.
The only problem with a week like that, is that now my hard-drive is BURSTING with these little seeds / saplings of songs, and I want nothing more than to absolutely bury myself in the dirt of them all for the next month(s) — but first, this week, I’m heading back home to Ireland.

I’ll see my family, see some nature, eat some good food, and then come back to Berlin, pull up the digital weeds, and see what those songs need next.
